翻訳ツールがカタカナIT略語をどう英訳するか調べてみました。

前回のブログ記事では、あまり一般的ではない企業内略語を使った文章を英訳すると、おかしな英文になってしまうというお話をしました。

今回は、IT業界でよく使われるカタカナ略語について、翻訳ツールがどのように英訳してくれるかを調べました。Google、DeepL、Microsoft、IBM の翻訳ツールを使って、それぞれ略語単体と文章で訳してみました。(2022年3月7日)

プレゼン (プレゼンテーション)、リスケ (リスケジュール)、サブスク (サブスクリプション)、ネゴ (ネゴシエーション)、ネック (ボトルネック)、リハ (リハーサル) については、IT業界以外でも使われるような言葉なのか、3つ以上のツールでほぼ正確に訳してくれました。

逆に、インバン (インターネットバンキング)、エグサマ (エグゼクティブサマリー)、スキトラ (スキルトランスファー)、ステコミ (ステアリングコミッティ)、マスケ (マスタスケジュール) については、どのツールを使っても日本語で意図している英文にはなりませんでした。

正しく訳された単語も、翻訳ツールが略さない表現に変えてくれているため意味の通る英文になっています。中には Neck や Riha のようにたまたま似た綴りの人名だったり、Intra や Brest のように地名として訳しているケースもあります。略語のままローマ字で訳しても通じませんので、くれぐれもご注意を！
